I distort and redact representational landscapes and intimate objects to express how we create and maintain memories. When I warp the perspective of familiar antiques, I aim to demonstrate our inability to communicate with those who have lost their memories due to aging. When I reduce the background of historical snapshots to geometric shapes, I aim to express how media representations shape our memory of historic events for us.
I primarily use oil paint on small, intimate canvases to engage with the medium’s historic standing as a medium of memory.
In my portraits I allude to the stages of conquering situational anxieties from despair to resolution and determination. I often pose my subjects facing the observer to show that the sitter takes ownership of their own choices. Through a series of portraits usually rendered at an inflection point, I hope to show the markers of remembered moments.
